About American Culture Club
Arguments about what the country means rarely arrive settled. American Culture Club reports from inside that argument, following the ideas that travel between galleries, classrooms, statehouses and streaming queues, and the people who carry them. The audience is a reading one: people who want cultural history with its citations intact, and who suspect that a monument, a sitcom and a school board fight are frequently the same story told at different volumes.
Our house form is the profile. A writer sits with a subject over weeks, checks the record behind the claims, and comes back with something that has a spine rather than a summary. Publicity calendars do not set the schedule here. We turn down celebration copy, unreported opinion, and any ending tidy enough to flatter everyone in it. Expect work that names its sources and leaves the disagreement visible on the page.
Culture carries the criticism and the longer profiles, while Ideas takes up the intellectual history underneath them, from the pamphlet to the argument that outlived its author. Society looks at how Americans live alongside each other now, and History goes back far enough to explain why that arrangement exists. Culture News keeps the running record of institutions, prizes, appointments and closures. Business News follows the money that decides which of those institutions survive another season.
